How OTDR Works
An OTDR uses a high-powered laser to send light pulses down the fiber optic cable. This reflected light, known as Fresnel reflections, is measured to determine the location and severity of events along the fiber (Fluke Networks) . By analyzing both backscattered and reflected light, the OTDR can calculate attenuation, insertion loss, and reflectance at various points along the fiber (The FOA) .
Purpose of the Light
The light in an OTDR is essential because it acts as a probe to "see" inside the fiber. Without the light pulse, the OTDR cannot detect events or measure the fiber's characteristics. The returning light is converted into a graphical trace, showing power versus distance, which technicians use to identify faults, verify splices, and assess overall fiber quality (EXFO) .
Practical Considerations
