Article Overview
The M-Hook method uses a specially designed double-arm hook to suspend optical cables on steel strands, improving installation efficiency and reducing cable damage.
M-Hook Structure and Function
The M-Hook, also known as an optical cable hanging protection hook, is formed from a bent elastic wire and consists of three main parts: a first support arm, a second support arm, and a main body hook. The first and second support arms are used to hang the hook on a steel strand or messenger wire, while the main body hook supports the optical cable itself. The arms are positioned approximately in a vertical reference plane aligned with the steel strand, and the main body hook is oriented perpendicular to this plane to securely hold the cable without excessive pressure that could damage the fibers . This design allows the hook to symmetrically distribute the cable weight, reducing stress points and preventing crushing or cutting of the cable jacket. The M-Hook improves the efficiency of erecting optical cable lines and reduces labor intensity compared to traditional V-shaped hooks or buckles .
Installation Method
- Preparation: Survey the route and ensure steel strands or messenger wires are properly tensioned and installed between poles or towers .
- Hanging the Hook: Place the first and second support arms over the steel strand so that the main body hook hangs below, ready to support the optical cable .
- Cable Placement: Lay the optical cable onto the main body hook, ensuring it rests securely without exceeding the minimum bending radius or tensile limits .
- Spacing and Tension: Hooks are typically spaced according to cable weight and span length, maintaining safe sag and minimizing stress on the cable .
Advantages of the M-Hook Method
- Reduced Labor: The hook design simplifies high-altitude installation, requiring fewer personnel .
- Cable Protection: The widened contact area and elastic support prevent damage to the cable jacket and fibers .
- Efficiency: Symmetrical design allows faster installation along long aerial routes, especially in rural or medium-sized cities where high-altitude erection is preferred .
- Compatibility: Works with standard steel strands, messenger wires, and various aerial cable types, including ADSS and figure-8 cables .
Related Aerial Installation Considerations
- Cable Types: All-Dielectric Self-Supporting (ADSS) cables can be used without a separate messenger, while figure-8 cables require a messenger strand .
- Tensioning: Proper tensioning of the messenger strand is critical to maintain safe sag and prevent excessive stress on the cable .
- Traction Methods: M-Hooks can be used with fixed-pulley traction or cable tray moving methods for controlled cable placement .
- Environmental Protection: Use UV-resistant jackets (e.g., carbon-black polyethylene) to protect cables from sunlight during aerial deployment . The M-Hook hanging method is widely adopted in modern aerial fiber optic installations due to its balance of safety, efficiency, and cable protection, making it suitable for both urban and rural high-altitude deployments.
