Core and Cladding

The core is the innermost part of the fiber, made of ultra-pure glass or silica, which carries the light signals. Surrounding the core is the cladding, a layer of glass with a slightly lower refractive index that confines light within the core through total internal reflection . This ensures efficient transmission of optical signals over long distances.

Buffer and Coating

Around the cladding, a buffer or coating is applied, usually made of plastic or acrylate materials. This layer protects the fiber from mechanical stress, microbending, and environmental damage, and can range from 250 microns to 900 microns in diameter . In some designs, multiple buffer layers are used for additional cushioning and to reduce cross-talk between fibers .

Cable-Level Structure

Optical fibers are often grouped into loose tubes or tight-buffered bundles within the cable. Loose tube designs may include gel-filled tubes to protect fibers from moisture and mechanical stress, while tight-buffered designs are more compact and suitable for indoor applications . The cable also includes strength members, such as steel wires or Kevlar strands, which provide tensile strength and prevent fiber stretching during installation . The outer jacket or sheath, typically made of polyethylene (PE) or other UV- and moisture-resistant materials, protects the cable from environmental hazards, including abrasion, water ingress, and UV exposure . Some cables may also include metallic layers, like corrugated steel tape, for additional protection in outdoor or underground deployments.
