In some designs, multiple buffer layers are used for additional cushioning and to reduce cross-talk between fibers .
Cable-Level Structure
Optical fibers are often grouped into loose tubes or tight-buffered bundles within the cable. Loose tube designs may include gel-filled tubes to protect fibers from moisture and mechanical stress, while tight-buffered designs are more compact and suitable for indoor applications . The cable also includes strength members, such as steel wires or Kevlar strands, which provide tensile strength and prevent fiber stretching during installation . The outer jacket or sheath, typically made of polyethylene (PE) or other UV- and moisture-resistant materials, protects the cable from environmental hazards, including abrasion, water ingress, and UV exposure . Some cables may also include metallic layers, like corrugated steel tape, for additional protection in outdoor or underground deployments.
