Article Overview
Fiber optic cable jumpers are classified by fiber type, connector type, and cable configuration, with each category tailored for specific network applications and distances.
1. Classification by Fiber Type
Fiber optic jumpers are primarily divided into single-mode and multimode types based on the core diameter and transmission distance:
Single-Mode Fiber (SMF): Features a small core (around 9 microns) allowing light to travel in a straight path, minimizing attenuation. Ideal for long-distance communications such as telecom networks and high-speed data backbones. Typically, single-mode jumpers are color-coded yellow with blue connectors and protective sleeves .
Multimode Fiber (MMF): Has a larger core (50–62.5 microns) supporting multiple light paths, suitable for short-distance applications like data centers and LANs. Multimode jumpers are usually orange or gray, with beige or black connectors .
2. Classification by Connector Type
Connectors ensure precise alignment and secure connections. Common types include:
- SC (Subscriber Connector): Square, snap-in design, widely used in routers and PON systems .
- LC (Lucent Connector): Small form factor, push-pull mechanism, common in high-density data centers .
- FC (Ferrule Connector): Screw-on metal housing, often used in patch panels and ODFs .
- ST (Straight Tip): Bayonet mount, used in legacy networks .
- MTRJ, MPO, MU, SMA, FDDI, E2000, DIN4: Specialized connectors for high-density or specific telecom applications . Connectors can also be combined in hybrid configurations, such as SC-SC, LC-LC, FC-SC, FC-LC, SC-ST, depending on network requirements .
3. Classification by Cable Configuration
- Simplex Jumpers: Single fiber with connectors at both ends, used for unidirectional transmission .
- Duplex Jumpers: Two fibers, each with connectors, for bidirectional communication, commonly used in data centers and LANs .
4. Classification by Sheath Material
The outer jacket material affects durability and fire safety:
- Standard PVC: General-purpose use.
- Flame Retardant (FR): For building safety compliance.
- Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH): Reduces toxic fumes in enclosed spaces.
- LSZH Flame Retardant: Combines low smoke and fire resistance for high-risk areas .
5. Length and Application Considerations
Fiber jumpers come in various lengths, typically 0.5m, 1m, 2m, 3m, 5m, 10m, to suit intra-rack, cross-facility, or long-haul connections . Proper selection ensures minimal signal loss and efficient network performance.
6. Handling Precautions
- Ensure matching transceiver wavelengths at both ends.
- Avoid excessive bending or looping to prevent signal attenuation.
- Protect connectors with sleeves and clean with alcohol before use to maintain optimal transmission quality . Fiber optic jumpers are essential for reliable, high-speed data transmission, and selecting the correct type based on fiber, connector, configuration, and environment is critical for network efficiency and longevity .
