  4. Access buffer tubes: Once the sheath is removed, identify and carefully handle the loose buffer tubes. For high fiber count cables, remove the outer layer of tubes first to expose the inner layer, handling each layer similarly .

Mid-Span Core Removal

  1. Locate the buffer tube reversal point: This is where the helical twist of the tubes changes direction. Accessing a 40-inch (100 cm) section usually reveals this point.
  2. Mark and remove sheath: Measure from the reversal point to determine the length of cable to access. Remove the sheath carefully to avoid damaging the fibers.
  3. Handle buffer tubes: Unwind the tubes gently from the reversal point. For cables with multiple layers, remove the outer layer first, then prepare the inner layer in the same manner .

Fiber Preparation

After core removal, fibers should be trimmed, cleaned, and prepared for termination or splicing. Use a primary coating stripping tool to remove the fiber coating without nicking the glass. Maintain the minimum bend radius to prevent attenuation or breakage .

  • Leave slack loops (typically 96 inches or 244 cm) for proper routing in closures.
  • Record cable identification markings for future reference.
