Article Overview
Single-fiber optical transceivers and duplex patch cords are commonly divided into A and B ends to ensure proper transmit and receive connections.
Single-Fiber Optical Transceivers
Single-fiber transceivers are designed to transmit and receive data over a single optical fiber. These modules have two distinct ends:
- A End (Transmit): This end is used for transmitting optical signals. Its wavelength is typically shorter than the receiving end .
- B End (Receive): This end is used for receiving optical signals. Its wavelength is slightly longer than the transmitting end . The A and B ends are crucial because they ensure that the transmitter on one module connects to the receiver on the other, maintaining proper bidirectional communication . Dual-fiber transceivers, in contrast, do not have A and B ends because each fiber is dedicated to a single direction (one for TX, one for RX), and the wavelengths at both ends are the same .
Duplex Patch Cords and A-B Polarity
In duplex fiber applications, A-B polarity is used to maintain correct signal flow:
- A-B Duplex Patch Cord: Provides a straight-through connection where the transmit (Tx) on one end connects to the receive (Rx) on the other .
- This polarity ensures that even with multiple patch panels or adapters, the Tx and Rx alignment is preserved, preventing data loss .
- The TIA-568-C.0 standard defines this A-B polarity scenario, which is widely used in LC patch cords and other duplex connections .
MPO Modules and Parallel Transmission
For parallel transmission optical modules like 40G-SR4 or 100G-SR4, MPO patch cords also follow A/B/C types:
- Type A: Straight-through MPO patch cord (key up–key down)
- Type B: Reversed MPO patch cord (key up–key up)
- These types help manage fiber polarity in multi-fiber connections, ensuring that signals are correctly routed from transmitters to receivers .
Summary
- Single-fiber transceivers: Divided into A (TX) and B (RX) ends with different wavelengths.
- Dual-fiber transceivers: No A/B ends; separate fibers for TX and RX.
- Duplex patch cords: Use A-B polarity to maintain proper Tx-Rx alignment.
- MPO modules: Use Type A/B/C patch cords and adapters to manage polarity in parallel fiber systems. Maintaining the correct A-B configuration is essential for reliable bidirectional communication and avoiding installation errors in fiber optic networks.
