- All three phase wires and the neutral are connected to the RCD input.
- Each phase output is connected to its respective overcurrent breaker, while the neutral output is connected to the neutral busbar .
Distribution Board Integration
The distribution board, also called a consumer unit, organizes the electrical supply safely. It typically contains:
- Double-pole MCBs (main isolator or main switch)
- RCDs for residual current protection
- Single-pole MCBs or fuses for individual circuits
The RCD is wired in-line with the circuits it protects, ensuring that any leakage current triggers the device to cut off power immediately, enhancing safety for users and appliances .
Safety Considerations
- Always ensure the RCD is rated for the maximum current of the circuits it protects.
- Regularly test the RCD using its test button to confirm functionality .
- If the RCD trips, identify and fix the fault before resetting, which may involve checking appliances, wiring, or insulation .
- Installation and wiring should comply with local electrical standards and be performed by a qualified electrician .
